CONTOH SHORT STORY "THE CRYING STONE"

CONTOH SHORT STORY "THE CRYING STONE"

THE CRYING STONE

Once upon a time, lived a poor old widow in a small village. She lived with her daughter. Her daughter was very beautiful but also very lazy and arrogant. She never helped her mother and didn’t want to know what problem her mother had. Everyday, she put make up and wears her best clothes. She always
wanted to look rich and beautiful.

One day, the mother and her daughter went to the market to buy some food. At first, the daughter refused to accompany her mother, but finally she agreed. “I’ll go with you, but you must walk behind me,” said the daughter. She didn't

want to walk side by side with her mother. Although her mother was very sad, she agreed to walk behind her daughter.

On the way to the market, everybody admired the girl's beauty. But they were also curious. Behind the beautiful girl, there was an old woman with a simple dress. The girl and her mother looked very different. “Hello, beautiful girl. Who is the old woman behind you? Is she your mother?" they asked. “No, she is not my mother. She is my servant,” the girl answered. Her mother was very sad to hear that, but she didn't say anything. She could understand that her daughter was ashamed.

The girl and the mother met other people. Again they asked who the woman behind the beautiful girl. And again the girl answered that her mother is her servant. She always said that her mother is her servant every time people asked.

At last, the mother cannot hold the pain anymore. She prayed to God to punish her daughter. Suddenly, the girl's leg turns into stone. Slowly, the process continues to the upper part of the girl's body. The girl was in panic. "Mother, please forgive me! Mother!" she cried and asked her mother to forgive her. But it's already too late. Her whole body finally becomes a big stone. Until now, people can still see tears falling down from the stone. People then call it batu menangis (it mean the crying stone).

CONTOH SHORT STORY "RATS"

Rats

Now at this time there was a great plague of rats in the London Docks. They were specially fierce rats, whose ancestors had come on steamers from Hong Kong along with tea and ginger and silk and rice. These rats ate all sorts of food which are brought to London in ships because we cannot grow enough food in England to feed all the people here. They are wheat from Canada and cheese from Holland, and mutton from New Zealand and beef from Argentina. They bit out pieces from the middle of Persian carpets to line their nests, and wiped their feet on silk
coats from China.
Now the man who is at the head of all the docks in London is called the Chairman of the Port of London Authority, and he is a very big bug indeed...He was awfully angry about the rats, because he has to look after the cargoes that are brought in ships... He sent for the best rat-catchers in London. But they only caught a few hundred rats, because they were a very cunning kind of rat. They had a king who lived in a very deep hole, and the other rats brought him specially good food. They brought him chocolate that had come from Switzerland, bits of turkey from France, dates from Algiers, and so on. And he told the other rats what to do. If any rat got caught in a trap, he sent out special messengers to give warning of the danger. He had an army of ten thousand of the bravest young rats, and they used to fight any other animals that were sent against them. A terrier can easily kill one or two rats; but if a hundred rush at him all at once, he may kill three or four of them, but the others will kill him in the end. The rats with the toughest teeth were trained to be engineers, and used to bite through the wire of rat-traps to let prisoners out.
So in one month these rats killed a hundred and eighty-one cats, forty-nine dogs, and ninety-five ferrets. And they wounded a lot of others so badly that they ran away if they even smelt a rat, let alone saw one. And they let out seven hundred and forty-two prisoners from six hundred and eighteen ferrets and traps, and gave up the job in despair. The people in the docks sent round to the chemists' shop for all sorts of rat poison, and sprinkled it about mixed with different sorts of bait. But the king rat gave orders that none of his subjects were to eat food unless it came straight out of a box or a barrel or a bag. So only a few disobedient rats got poisoned, and the others said it served them right. And the poison was no more of use than the dogs and ferrets and traps.
John Burdon Sanderson Haldane (1892 - 1964) spent the last five years of his life in India and became an Indian citizen. A polymath in a real sense, Haldane's best contributions are in the mathematical theory of evolution and he is one of the founders of population genetics.

CONTOH SHORT STORY "THE BUTTERFLY IN A BOTTLE"

 The Butterfly in a Bottle

Poltu was wide awake in his bed. He had had a marvellous dream in which he had won the football match in the inter-school competition. He was getting ready to receive the trophy when the alarm rang. So loudly that it jarred him awake.

But Poltu wasn't too unhappy at the intrusion. He ran straight to his study table. There, in an empty jam bottle, was the treasure.
A colourful little butterfly. How difficult it had been to catch it. It had kept flying away from his grasp. But catch it he did. Without a net, too. And now it was going to be part of his biology project in school.

The Butterfly in a Bottle, Stories for kids: 109_1.gif The biology project required Poltu to submit the study of a living creature every month. Most of his classmates drew diagrams from their books as part of this exercise. But Poltu was going to do something different. He was going to present a live creature - this butterfly.

Poltu loved the different colours on the wings of the butterfly. Red, green and blue. How beautiful it looked when it fluttered the wings. Poltu had made a few holes on the cap of the bottle to let air pass through, and added tender leaves for the butterfly to nibble on. He might have trapped the creature, but he cared for it.

Excited about displaying his exhibit to the biology teacher, Poltu dressed hurriedly, and left for school. His school was walking distance from his house. He took a short cut through the backyard of Sinha aunty's house, a stretch he loved walking through. The breeze was very pleasant as it had rained slightly the previous night. The garden smelt of sweet-smelling flowers, jasmine and 'mogra'. Poltu glanced at his bottle every now and then and smiled at the butterfly fluttering its wings.

When he reached school, gate wasn't wholly open yet. For once Poltu was early to school. A few boys were playing football in the field. Any other day would have seen Poltu joining them without a second thought. But today, he walked straight into his class. He opened the bench window and placed the bottle on the windowsill.

CONTOH SHORT STORY "SAND AND STONE"

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WR. WB.
A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand, ”Today my best friend slapped me in the face.”
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one, who had been slapped, got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After the friend recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone, “Today my best friend saved my life.”
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, ”After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?” The other friend replied, “When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in the stone where no wind can ever erase it.”

"Learn to write your hurts in the sand,
And to carve your benefits in stone"

CONTOH REPORT TEXT "CHAMELEONS"

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WR. WB.

There are 80 different types of chameleons in the world, most of which are to be found in Africa, south of Sahara Desert. The common chameleon ranges from the Middle East, along the North African coast to southern Spain.
The chameleon is slow-moving lizard which hunts for insect among trees and undergrowth. One of its peculiar features is its eyes, which are set in two conical sockets and can move independently of one another. This enables the chameleon to look behind with one eye and in front with the other.
Chameleons are well-known for their ability to change colour. The skin and body markings can change colour to match the surroundings. Among the plants, for example, the chameleon is very difficult to spot among foliage.
When the chameleon spots an insect which it thinks would make a fine meal, it shoots out a long, sticky tongue and draws its prey back into its mouth.
